Expiry dates for passports, licenses and policies
Remind yourself months before a passport, license, insurance policy or warranty runs out.
Plus Part of Ourstead Plus. What Plus includes.
During the beta
Expiry dates are not open during the beta. This article describes how they work when they open.
Add a date
- Open Documents from More, in the House group.
- Open the page menu and choose Expiry dates, or open a person in People and choose Expiry dates from their menu.
- Tap Add a date.
- Choose What is it? first, then Whose is it? and The date it runs out.
- For an insurance policy or warranty, you can add What it is (optional), such as “Car insurance”.
- Tap Add date.
Read the date from a photo
For a passport, driver’s license or ID card, tap Read the date from a photo. The photo is read on your phone, and the date appears for you to check before you save. A passport is read from its machine-readable line, and a license or ID card from the date beside its expiry label.
Read on this phone. The photo and the number are never kept or sent anywhere.
For an insurance policy or warranty, reading a photo follows the household’s choice under Privacy & data: Only on this phone means type the date, Ask me first shows what would be sent and asks, and Read automatically reads it without asking. You can always type the date instead.
When the reminders come
Passports get a reminder 9 months and 6 months before they run out, because many countries refuse a passport with less than six months left. Driver’s licenses and ID cards get 2 months, insurance policies 1 month and 1 week, and warranties 1 month. Each reminder comes once, on Today under Coming up, and by notification if the household has notifications on. Notifications follow each grown-up’s choices and quiet hours.
Documents and warranties already in the app
A document with an expiry date, and a warranty on something in Home, appear in the list too. They are links rather than copies: tap the line to change or remove the date where it lives. Removing a date from this page never deletes the document or the warranty.
Who sees them
Grown-ups who can see the household’s documents see every date. Children do not see this page. A paper kept for one person is still shown to the grown-ups, because a child’s passport reminder goes to them. Nothing from this page appears on the kitchen wall display.
Plus
Expiry dates are part of Plus. Without Plus, every date already added stays here and stays readable; the page offers See what Plus does instead of an Add button.
